Neurotropism in peripheral nerve regeneration

The peripheral nervous system is essential for the functioning of the limbs and organs.Most peripheral nerves comprise a mixture of sensory,motor and autonomic neurons.The main function of peripheral nerves is to carry information obtained from the peripheral effector to the central nervous system,and to transmit the instruction issued by the central nervous system to the end effector to produce physiological activity.In cases of peripheral nerve rupture,the pathway between the central nervous system and target organ is interrupted,and Wallerian degeneration,a series of changes in cell and molecular biology,occurs in the distal segment of the nerve (Li et al.,2013).The proximal nerve has good regenerative capacity,but disruption to the original pathway may cause regenerated fibers to be redirected to incorrect target organs,leading to the wrong muscles being controlled by the motor nerve fibers and resulting in motor dysfunction.Similarly,incorrectly regenerated sensory nerve fibers will cause sensory abnormalities.Miswiring in the autonomic nervous system can lead to autonomic dysfunction due to mislocalization,and neurotropism is the key to preventing mislocalization.
