Since 1963, more than 500 cases of fatty liver encephalopathy syndrome have been reported, but its etiology is not yet clear. Most patients have a virus-like illness before their encephalopathy. This article reports data collected from the national surveillance system for fatty liver and encephalopathy since 1973 and a nationwide outbreak of fatty liver encephalopathy syndrome in February and March 1974 and its epidemiological relationship with influenza B virus. 379 cases of fatty liver disease syndrome occurred from December 15, 1973 to June 30, 1974, of which 316 cases occurred in February and March 1974. There were 179 males and 200 females in 379 cases. The average age of 11 years old, 11 to 14 years of age accounted for 37% of the total, over the age of 16 only 4%.
