近几年进口的国外汽车,普遍采用了发动机排气制动装置。这种装置是利用发动机不工作状况(即呈空压机工况)时将排气管部分堵塞所产生的阻力,通过传动系统使车轮产生制动力。排气制动有它独特的优点,例如采用排气制动可减少车轮制动鼓与制动衬片的磨损、制动缓和平稳、左右制动力分配均匀,制动稳定性较好、不易产生侧滑。但是,由于排气制动的最大制动力较小,且制动缓慢,不能用来作为紧急制动,只能用于长距离的制动和减速。因而它是一种辅助的制动系统。
