“An Exhibition of Paintings and Calligraphic Works by Liu Feng and Liang Pingbo” was inaugurated on May 18 2010 at Zhejiang Art Gallery on the West Lake, in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province. Provincial leaders, incumbent or in retirement, such as Lu Zushan, Mao LInsheng, Sheng Changli, Huang Xuming, Li Jinming, Sun Zhonghuan, Xue Ju, Shen Zulun, Ge Hongsheng, Wang Jiayang, Zhao Changqing, and Xu Jiang attended the inaugural ceremony.
Liu Feng and Liang Pingbo used to be top leaders of Zhejiang Province. And working as leaders or in retirement, they have been directly and actively engaged in promoting cultural undertakings across the province. Moreover, they are artists in their own rights as convincingly testified by their artworks at the exhibition.
Liu Feng’s calligraphic style absorbs the elements of Su Shi and Dong Qichang, two ancient great calligraphers in the Chinese history. His brushstrokes are powerful, majestic, and tasteful. Liang Pingbo’s traditional Chinese painting is realistic in depicting images, but he adds a freehand touch to his realistic explorations, thus embodying a unique aesthetics in his brushstrokes and ink techniques.
On display are more than 100 artworks by the duo. In various subjects and forms, they reflect a spirit of harmony, which in turns showcases an ideal relationship between man and nature, between man and society. With these artworks, the two artists pay homage to Chinese tradition and art. This is their way of saying that they wish to do their bit to carry on the past to the future.
Born in 1937 with his ancestral roots in Longyao, Hebei Province, Liu Feng studied Chinese at Beijing University and journalism at People University of China from 1957 to 1961. Before retirement, he worked as a CPC high-ranking official in Qinghai Province in west China and a high-ranking government official in Zhejiang Province. Since retirement, he has worked, among other prestigious positions, as director of Cultural Dialogue.
Liang Pingbo is born in 1945 in Changting, Fujian Province. Since graduating from Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (the predecessor of China Academy of Art today) in 1970, he has spent decades exploring figure painting in traditional style. He as worked as a high-ranking government official in Zhejiang before retirement. Now he is director of Zhejiang Research Institute of Culture and History, honorary president of Zhejiang Academy of Traditional Chinese Painting, director of China Artists Association, and director of steering board of arts under Zhejiang Artists Association.
