周扬同志在第三次全国文代会的报告中说:“文艺的工农兵方向,给文学艺术开辟了新的天地,使作家、艺术家找到了新的主题、新的表现对象和新的服务对象。”我打心眼儿里拥护毛主席的文艺为工农兵服务的方向。我琢磨着:什么是新的主题呢?那就是要表现社会主义革命和建设事业。什么是新的表现对象和新的服务对象呢?那就是工农兵。我过去理解的为工农兵服务,就仅仅是送戏上门,给工农兵演出自己的拿手戏;至于站在什么立场上,用什么思想情感去为他们演戏,那就不管了。很明显,这是太不够了。没有正确的指导思想,就不可能全心全意为他们服务。自己满脑子的资产阶级思想,立场不变过来,根本就不能理解工农兵,要演现代戏表现工农兵,就只能用资产阶级思想往工农兵身上套。结果,就会歪曲工农兵的形象。想来想去,我才进一步地认识了为工农兵服务,首先得彻底改造自己的资产阶级世界观的道理。

I did not care as to what position I was standing on and what emotional thoughts to play for them. Obviously, this is not enough. Without the correct guiding ideology, it is impossible to serve them wholeheartedly. With his mind full of bourgeois ideas, his position can not be understood and the workers, peasants and soldiers can not be understood at all. If we want to play the role of workers, peasants and soldiers in modern operas, we can only use the bourgeois ideology to go over the workers, peasants and soldiers. As a result, the image of workers, peasants and soldiers will be distorted. In retrospect, I further learned the truth of serving the workers, peasants and soldiers first and foremost to completely reform my own bourgeois world outlook.
