At the end of the Spring & Autumn Period， Lord Ping of the State of Chu was notorious for his fatuity and stupidity. He easily took in the slander of Fei Wuji and framed the crown prince Jian. Hearing the news， Jian immediately fled to other states with his relatives. Lord Ping moved his anger to Wu She， the teacher of Jian. At that time， Wu She’s two sons Wu Shang and Wu Yuan – also known as Wu Zixu – were staying outside. Lord Chu， with the evil purpose of killing them all， asked Wu She to write to his two sons， luring them back to the capital.
Without knowing the trick， Wu She indeed did as asked. Wu Shang went back to the capital after receiving the letter and ended up being killed with Wu She. His brother Wu Yuan， seeing through the plan， did not return and fled out of Chu.
Wu Yuan went to the State of Wu and won the trust of Guang， a prince of this state. He helped Guang take the crown of the State of Wu. He entrusted Wu Yuan with the right of commanding his army.
Several years later， another minister named Xi Wan was also set up and killed by his ill-purposed co-ministers. All his family but one was slaughtered. The only survivor was called Bo Pi， a foster-child of Xi Wan that had grown a strong bond with his foster-father. He survived the massacre to his family when Xi Wan was killed. After hearing that Wu Yuan had taken an important position in the State of Wu， he went to Wu Yuan for shelter.
When Bo Pi arrived in the State of Wu and found Wu Yuan， he told Wu what happened to him. Having heard that Bo Pi’s family was also killed by Lord Ping like him， Wu Yuan was very compassionate towards him. He treated Bo Pi wholeheartedly and recommended him to the Lord of Wu. Someone felt strange about why Wu Yuan was so good to Bo Pi even though it was the first time they met. So they asked him： “Why do you trust Bo Pi so much even though you do not know him at all.”
Wu Yuan said： “That’s because he and I have the same vengeance. People suffering the same disease show compassions to each other and people sharing the same worries aid each other. He and I have gone through the same tragedy. I would definitely come to help him.”
