In 1977, according to the President’s Global 2000 Report compiled by President Carter, it is predicted that there will be a dramatic increase in the world’s population by the year 2000. The total world population in 1975 was 4.09 billion, estimated at 1.5% of the population’s annual minimum growth rate. In 2000, it was 5.9 billion. Estimated at a 2.1% annual rate of increase, the figure for 2000 is 6.8 billion. Estimated at an average growth rate of 1.8%, it will reach about 6.35 billion yuan in 2000. Even more disturbing is that the world’s population birth rate will maintain the current rate of 1.8% growth in the future, while some developing countries are likely to reach 2.1%. In less than 35 years, the population of underdeveloped areas in the world will double.
