In early 1929, Berenice Abbott returned from Europe to the United States, and she was going to New York to look for publishing opportunities for Eugene Ajit. In the face of the dizzying New York scene, she set her mind on her heart and felt that photography was promising, so she went back to New York after closing the studio in Paris. She shot the first picture of New York, using a hand-held Kurt-Bentzin German camera, but quickly adjusted it to a large format camera. Eugène Age’s diligence and attention to detail motivated her to leave the historic imagery of New York City, especially the Manhattan neighborhood.
