我县是著名“青州烟”的主要产地之一,种植烤烟已有70余年的历史。随着生产力的不断发展,我县烤烟的种植季节也在不断变化。50年代中期以前,由于生产水平较低,烤烟虽然以麦收后移栽的夏烟为主,但5月中旬移栽的春烟(春田)却占有相当的比例。随着生产力的发展,二年三作轮作制逐渐为一年二作制所替代。在50年代后期和60年代,我县的烤烟基本上都是麦收后移栽的夏烟。但从1964年起,夏烟又暴露了难以克服的弱点:一是赤星病为害严重,严重影响烟叶质量;二是因小麦产量迅速增加,成熟期延迟5-7天,烤烟移栽期不得不推迟10-20天,烟后又要复种小麦,造成烤烟大田生育期不足及劳力紧张,
