Aplastic anemia (AA) is characterized by bone marrow cells in the formation of mature red blood cells, granulocytes and thrombocytopenia, resulting in decreased whole blood. In vitro observations and clinical studies, including the successful treatment of immunosuppressive therapy in patients with AA, support the theory that an abnormal immune response inhibits stem cell differentiation and regeneration resulting in marked myelodysplasia.
