Objective To investigate the effect of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) on cochlear function in children. Methods The results of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) in 26 children (52 ears) with OSAS admitted to Children’s Hospital of Guangzhou from June 2002 to August 2003 were compared with those of 28 children (56 ears) normal children . Results The polysomnography (PSG) of 26 OSAS children showed the lowest oxygen saturation (57.91 ± 18.61) and the index of respiratory disorder (29.10 ± 23.31), which were significantly different from those of normal children. There was no significant difference in DPOAE amplitude between F1 ~ F4 frequency group and normal group (P> 0.05). The DPOAE response amplitude in F4 ~ F11 and DPOAE in F1 ~ F11 Normal children with low, the difference was significant (P <0.05). Conclusion OSAS can lead to impaired cochlear function in children, and OSAS should be performed routinely for otoacoustic emission testing. Early diagnosis and early treatment should be done.
