There are often confusing words in English vocabulary. Although the meaning of these words is different from the word categories they belong to, they often give people an illusion that we have nothing to do. These words often appear to bring a lot of trouble to our English learning. Here are some confusing words to talk about their basic usage. 1.Why does Marrilyn Monroe have such a tremendous(affect, effect)on you? 2.His actions(affect, effect)me strangely. In the above sentence, affect is usually a verb, indicating an action, meaning “to influence, To change.“ For example, Everyone was affected by the war. The effect is usually a noun, which expresses the name of a concept, meaning the ”effect and result“ caused. For example: The effect of the war was widespread. Sometimes an effect can also be used as a verb. When it is a verb, it means ”to achieve, achieve.“ For example, ”We must effect better relations with Russia if we wish to avoid another war." When the verbs needed in a sentence can be replaced with bring about or result, the sentence applies the effect, otherwise it uses the affect. No effect can be used before human nouns or personal pronouns.
