Bopindolol is a potent beta-blocker with a very long duration of action; it blocks alpha 1 and alpha 2 receptors and has intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA). Hemodynamic double-blind studies have shown that 35 patients with essential hypertension treated with either bropingllol or atenolol (selective β-blocker, ISA-free), have similar antihypertensive efficacy at 8 weeks. However, BOPP decreased total peripheral vascular resistance by 10.6%, with no change in myocardial function. Atenolol decreased the amount of cardiac output by 9.7%.
