Millimeter waves are high frequency electromagnetic waves with frequencies between 30 and 300 GHz. The widespread use of millimeter-wave technology in military and medical fields, especially the emergence of non-lethal millimeter-wave weapons has drawn great attention on the research of the millimeter-wave damage effect and safety protection. Millimeter waves due to poor tissue penetration (less than 1 mm), direct irradiation can only cause corneal, skin and other injuries, but high-dose whole body irradiation can also lead to circulatory failure and death. This article describes the cornea, skin damage and lethal effects caused by millimeter-wave irradiation.
