In the pH range of 5 to 12, the reaction between fine particles (typically -2 micron chalcopyrite) and polymer-stabilized oil droplets was studied as a function of pH and weight percent solids. Partially esterified polymethacrylate-stabilized oil droplets and cellulose xanthate were used as collectors. Chalcopyrite can be efficiently separated from fine-grained quartz gangue at a pH of 11 using a cellulose xanthate stabilized emulsion. Satisfactory recoveries and concentrate grades are obtained at pH values of at least 5.1% (solids weight). At other pHs, the selectivity deteriorates due to the activated quartz surface of divalent copper (hydrolyzed on chalcopyrite).
