台湾1981年以台糖171×74—575杂交,选出品系82—2871。1992年命名为新台糖16。母本祖先为NCO310(第4代)与台糖146(第3代),父本曾祖父为台湾原产野生甘蔗66582(Saccharum Spontaneum)。中至中大茎、茎长、实心、容易脱叶,不易倒伏,属特早熟高糖品种,可制糖率、成熟性与新台糖1相仿。其蔗产量的潜力优于新台糖10。遇台风大雨后倒状比新台糖10为轻,不易抽穗,成熟后不易退糖,原料蔗比新台糖10易变质。宿根性好,与新台糖10相似。抗露菌病、黑穗病、锈病与嵌纹病。
