陕北民歌曲调悠扬高亢,粗犷豪放,苍凉激越,淳朴优美。具有非常浓郁的地方风格。调式以徵调式、商调式为主。旋律进行中,大量使用“清角为宫”、“变宫为角”、“闰为宫”的转调或者调式交替手法。旋律中跳进非常普遍,句子的音区跨度经常达到八度或八度以上。无论是徵调式还是商调式,旋律中的“角”音都处于较为次要的位置,常作为辅助或者经过形式出现。由于对“角”音的边缘化,使得徵、羽、宫、商四声为主的旋律在调性上带有较大的游移性。
