一九二九年一月,梁启超在北京以五十七之龄溘然去世,京、沪两地的追悼会倒也开得隆重,名流纷至,一时称盛。而当年九月,其南京高等师范学校的授业学生张其昀即已慨叹:“自梁先生之殁,舆论界似甚为冷淡。”(《悼梁任公先生》)个中原因,张氏并未深究。一九三五年,吴宓印行诗集,末附《空轩诗话》,亦对此一现象迷惑不解:“梁先生为中国近代政治文化史上影响最大之人物,其逝也,反若寂然无闻,未能比于王静安先生之受人哀悼。吁,可怪哉!”王国维从始至终
In January 1929, Liang Qichao passed away in Beijing with a 57-year-old age. The memorial service in Beijing and Shanghai turned out to be grand and famous. In September of that year, Zhang Qiyun, a qualified student at Nanjing Normal Normal University, lamented that “since Mr. Liang’s opinion, the media seemed rather cold.” (“Mourning Mr. Ren Gong”) . In 1935, Wu Kui’s solo collection of poems, ending with “Empty Xuan Shi Hua”, also puzzled this phenomenon: "Mr. Leung is the most influential figure in the history of modern Chinese political culture.
