Improvements in logging tool vertical resolution and advanced data processing techniques can help solve the laminar problem. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging can determine the residual water saturation associated with clay, and with small particle sizes. Because logging-while-drilling allows the most accurate measurement of formation resistivity, bit resistivity measurements also play an important role in discriminating between low-resistivity zones when the effect of intrusion is minimal. In evaluating low resistivity zones, the combined magnetic resonance (CMR) has the obvious advantage of being able to detect common areas of dead gas more effectively.
