【摘要】高中英语选修教材Book 6(人教版)存在一些语用问题:标点符号,习惯用语。一一在此列出,并作了相应的分析、提供了可能的改正,以供商榷。

【Abstract】There are some mistakes in NEW SENIOR ENGLISH FOR CHINA STUDENT'S BOOK 6: Punctuation marks, practical usages. I have made a list of them and made some analysis, providing some possible correct ones for discussion.

高中英语选修教材Book 6(人教版)是一本难得的学习材料。它选材广泛,内容、结构、程度与分量等都符合高中学生的心理和生理发展的需要,能够激发其兴趣,语言真实、地道、自然。但是,在教学实践中,我发现教材中也存在一些语言应用问题,在此列出来供大家商榷。
1 标点符号问题
1.1 We know that the levels of carbon dioxide have increased greatly over the last 100 to 150 years. It was a scientist called Charles Keeling, who made accurate measurements of the amount of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from 1957 to 1997.( Lines5-10,page 26 ,Unit4,Book 6)
本句中的逗号应该删除。因为此句只能看作是强调句型,强调“a scientist called Charles Keeling”。如果加上逗号,把后面的从句看成非限制定语从句,那么代词“It”指代什么?很明显通过上下文来看,我们根本找不到指什么。
1.2 HIV weakens a person’s immune system; that is , the part of the body that fights disease. (Lines 2 -3,Page 22,Unit 3)
此处的分号“;”应该改成逗号“,”。因为“that is (to say)(也就是说,即) ”在这里是插入语,引出的解析是句子,可用分号,也可用逗号或者句号,如果是短语,用逗号分开。“a person’s immune system”(人的免疫系统)就是 “the part of the body that fights disease”( 身体与疾病作斗争的那个部分)。如果是分号,“that is” 后面也不应该有逗号,况且 “that” 又指代什么呢?例如:
1).John is a New Yorker;that is, he lives in New Yorker.
2). “I think, finally, I shall go into the navy.” “You ?”“If they’d have me, that is.” (A DICTIONARY OF CURRENT ENGLISH USAGE)
3).He’s a local government administrator, that is (to say), a Civil Servant.

1.3 It’s my birthday in two weeks time and I’ll be 82 years old. ( Line 3 ,Page 18, Unit 3,Book 6)
“two weeks time”应该改成 “two weeks’ time”,或者是 “two
weeks away”。因为表示“时间、距离、路程等”,可以用时间名词
所有格结构(如果是单数加 “ ’s”,本身是复数以 “ s”结尾的用 “s’
也可以用of 结构来表示。例如,five minutes’ talk, ten hours’ walk,
one day’s meeting.
如果是名词作定语,表示所修饰名词的材料、用途、性质等。
wood head, street lights.
当然,如果时间名词后是副词,就直接在后面加副词。例如,
Our winter holiday is twenty days away.
1.4An eyewitness account of a murder at Flat 3,Southampton Garden, London.(Page 37, Unit 5,Book 6)
“ An eyewitness account” 应为“An eyewitness’s account”。虽然此处是标题,不十分讲究语法,但是如果省略后产生歧义,标点是不能省略的。在这里如果我们把 “account”看成动词,它后面不会接 “of”。
2 习惯用法的问题
2.1 A few words of warning: the admission price is not cheap and the museum is often crowded.(The last sentence Para. 2 from the bottom ,Page 6 ,Unit 1,Book 6)
此句中的“cheap”应改为high 更合适,因为价格(price)是用高低(high/low)来衡量,而物品才用贵贱(expensive/cheap)来修饰,它们的用法是约定俗成的,一般是不能更改。(参见LONGMAN DICTIONARY OF CONTEMPORY ENGLISH)
2.2 First, you can become addicted to nicotine …. Secondly, you become addicted through habit…. Lastly, you can become mentally addicted.( Para 3, page 18, unit 3)
这里的 “First”改为 “Firstly”更好,因为后面的词分别为 “secondly”、“lastly”。虽然 “first/second/last”可以作副词,“firstly/secondly/lastly”也可以作副词,它们在列举时,没有什么区别,但是我们很少能见到它们混在一起使用,即, “first/secondly/finally”或者 “firstly/second/last”。(参见OXFORDADVANCED LEARNER’S ENGLISH-CHINESE DICTIONARY)
以上只是我在教学中发现的一些我认为不妥的问题,所提的也只是个人的一些看法,以供商榷。也恳请各位专家、同行们批评指正。
