Symbiosis was a trend of thought that has had a wide-ranging impact on society in Japan since the 1970s. It proposed a new concept different from that of Japan’s traditional morality and advocated the common consideration and coordinated development of man and nature, man and man, man and society. This ideological trend seeks to break through the limitations of traditional morals characterized by “harmony” and “corporatism,” so as to adapt to the new international situation and solve emerging problems in Japanese society. Symbiotic ethics have made progress in medical treatment, environmental protection, national welfare, women’s liberation, and the interests of persons with disabilities.
