In May 1983, in the Toa Payoh area in Singapore, a random sample was selected and questionnaires were used to investigate the use of medical services and costs in the urban areas of the Ding Poverty-stricken Economic Zone through household surveys. The average number of visits per year estimated in the study was 3.8 visits to the general practitioner and 1.7 visits to the government hospital. The number of visits by women (including visits to general practitioners and government hospitals) was 1.5 times that of men. The hospitalization rates for women and men were 10.9% and 5.1% per year respectively. Almost three-quarters of respondents did not use medical services. Among respondents, 15.1% were provided medical expenses by the company, and 13.2% were provided by the government for medical expenses. The average monthly household medical cost is $18.30, which is 1.95% of the average household income.
