The quantifier system is well developed in modern Chinese and the use of measure words is also very flexible. In modern Chinese, there are phenomena of “one quantity of many things” and “one quantity of many things”. Based on the special status of quantifiers, collocation of nouns and quantifiers has become an unavoidable problem in the study of modern Chinese. Any kind of linguistic phenomenon can reflect human’s cognition of the objective world. The collocation of quantifiers and nouns is no exception. The collocation of nouns is not arbitrary but has some cognitive motivation. This paper explores the motivation of the above two phenomena from the perspective of cognition and argues that the existence of the phenomenon of “a large number of objects” is caused by the similarity of many subjects described by the measure because of subjective or objective similarities. The existence of a phenomenon of “a quantity of many things” is caused by the multidimensional nature of cognitive objects.
