On December 4, 2001, the 11th Shanghai International Maritime Exhibition was grandly opened at the Shanghai International Exhibition Center. In this Maritime Exhibition, the China Pavilion is the largest exhibition hall. The exhibits include more than 20 items such as shipbuilding achievements in military and civilian products, marine engineering, port facilities, power machinery, and marine equipment in recent years. Since 1996, China’s shipbuilding production has been ranked third in the world for five consecutive years, and it is expected that shipbuilding can reach 4.5 million dwt in 2001, which is a substantial increase from last year. 60.9% of the ships built in China are exported to the outside world, and a total of 7.9 billion U.S. dollars was created during the Ninth Five-Year Plan period.
