R.G.Colingwood (1889-1943) is a famous British philosopher of history and archeology. What he calls “historical reenactment” is “History is a repetition of past experience in the minds of historians.” He emphasized that “history is the history of ideas.” There is nothing beyond the mind that can be regarded as the object of history. Historical events are the product of human thought. To understand historical events, historical figures and their activities, we must first understand people’s thoughts and understand history truly. Only “thoughts” can repeat themselves in people’s minds. He emphasized the unity of subject and object. To reconstruct the ancients’ thoughts, historians must unite the past and the present to achieve the unity of the subject and the object.
