Foreword In 1991, the chief of staff of the USAF proposed a series of questions on situational awareness (SA) in fighter military exercises, including the following: Can SA be measured? Can SA be predicted? Will SA be trained? Armstong Laboratory In an attempt to answer these questions, a three-part study was started. This article provides a general view of a comprehensive research program and discusses this premier part of research on the development of a measurement tool for a combat exercise environment. Methods Three “situational awareness rating scales (SARS)” were developed to measure the pilot’s ability to work in combat fighter environments. These instruments assess SA from three points of view: flight inspector, colleague, and self-report. SARS funds
