Before I ever arrived in China, I spent some time researching what would become my new home. I still
remember one of the first things I read about Guangzhou: “At first sight, Guangzhou appears less as a city that is developing than one that is about to explode.” I knew that Guangzhou was considered a “developing” city, but I had no idea how fast the rate of development was happening.
The moment my feet touched Chinese ground, I understood. Guangzhou is overflowing[
bursting at the seams[过于拥挤]. With what? Everything.
Shopping, parks, traffic, art, rain, music, history,
culture, tea – the list goes on. But most especially, it is packed with my favourite thing: food.
You cannot say that you have experienced
Canton[英语中广州的旧称] without experiencing Cantonese food. Culture and food are practically synonymous[同义的]
here, and eating alone is something that is barely
tolerated[容忍] (or even possible). It begins in the morning
with “yum cha,” or dim sum. This is more of an event than a meal, and should be shared accordingly. For a fantastic
experience, check out Banxi Restaurant in the beautiful
Liwan Park on 151 Longjin Xi Lu. However, there are
tiny, family-run dim sum places splashed[使成斑驳状]
all over the city, and these can be real treasures.
If food is your thing, then you won’t want to miss Huangsha Seafood Market, located near Shamian Island (Huangsha metro[地铁] station). A wander[漫步]
through this market will give you a real feel for local life and the local diet. Be sure to check out the fresh
seafood, which you can purchase and then have cooked for you right there. And don’t forget to take a couple rolls of film with you, as the opportunities for
interesting and unique photos are plentiful here.
Forgot your camera? Or maybe you’re interested in antique[古董] cameras? Maybe you’re not really that interested in cameras at all, but the secondhand
photography market on Dashatou San Road is still worth checking out. It’s got a ton of cool things to see, plus there is an electronics market, as well as a fabric
  market, just up the street.
And if you love shopping, then Shangxiajiu
Pedestrian[行人(的)] Street is a must-see. More specifically, Zhuangyuanfang Alley[小巷], just off of Shangxiajiu, is where the youth of Guangzhou go to shop. This is where trends are started, and a
stroll[闲逛] down this alley is entertaining not just for the shopping, but also for the people watching.
But maybe you want something a little more
exciting, a little more adventurous? If so, you should take the metro to Hanxi Changlong station, get out at exit E, and take the shuttle bus[穿梭巴士] to any of the many amusement parks and theme parks in the area. There’s Chime-Long Paradise Amusement Park, Chime-Long International Circus, Xiangjiang Safari[狩猎旅行] Park, and Chime-Long Water Park. Check out their website for opening times and park fares[费用].
I’ve been talking about all the things you can do in Guangzhou, but with a history of more than 2000 years, there are also plenty of things to see. The Liurong Temple (87 Liurong Lu) dates back to the 6th century, with the pagoda[宝塔] on site
predating[时间上先于] even that. Shamian Island is home to Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel (14 Shamian Street), fascinating due to the fact that, for several hundred years, this was the only area in all of China where Europeans were allowed to settle.
Even recent history has produced some amazing
sights: Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall (Dongfeng Zhong Lu), dedicated to local hero Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, was constructed between 1929 and 1931 on the original site of Sun Yat-Sen’s presidential[总统的] office. The Chen Clan[宗族] Academy[学院] (Zhongshan Qi Lu) is an excellent example of architecture[建筑] from the 19th century and has recently been transformed into a museum.
Finally, when the day is done and you get tired of
sight-seeing, take a moment to relax and have a break in one of the numerous parks that Guangzhou has to offer. From
Baiyun Mountain, to Martyr[烈士]’s Park and Yuexiu Park, there is always something going on. Watch the daily dance
lessons, take part in a game of cards, or just relax and listen to the music that will be coming from at least one (probably more) areas of the park.
Whether you’re a first-timer to Guangzhou, or an old hat to the Canton experience, there always seems to be something new going on. With a population of over ten
million people, there’s a variety[多样性] to this city that is hard to match. For the true Canton experience, a blend[混和] of the modern and historical is necessary. Eat, sight-see, shop, relax – Guangzhou has it all. It’s an explosion of culture, tradition, and just pure fun. Welcome to the party!

A man and his wife went to visit friends in another part of the country and
