The nm23-H1 gene encodes a protein similar to nucleoside diphosphokinase and may participate in the maintenance of normal tissue construction and cell-cell relationship through microtubule assembly and dispersion and signal transduction via the G protein. Therefore, it has been suggested that its abnormal expression may contribute to the proliferation of neoplastic cells. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between intrahepatic tumor recurrence and nm23-H1 mRNA expression in patients with isolated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) < 5 cm. Two groups of patients were studied. Group A was 7 patients with cirrhosis who had isolated HCC, <5 cm, and who underwent surgical resection and early recurrence of intrahepatic disease during follow-up. Their median time to recurrence was 12 (3 to 24) months. HCC recurrence in all these patients was confirmed by routine US follow-up and confirmed by fine needle aspiration biopsy and/or elevated AFP levels. Group B is suffering from isolated HCC, <5cm, and surgical resection
