The earthquake that struck Bukhara State, the Federal Republic of Uzbekistan, on 19 March 1984, destroyed the gas town of Gadzli. Although 100 were wounded, no one was killed. However, the suction compressor mains that supplied the two main natural gas lines stopped working for several hours. Uzbek authorities have reason to be proud that they have quickly recovered from the disaster and that the recent earthquake early warning system led them not only to alert the population but also to plan disaster relief arrangements in advance.
