胡适早年曾说:我们晚一辈的少年人只认得守旧的林琴南(林纾字琴南),而不知道当日的维新党林琴南;只听得林琴南老年反对白话文学,而不知道林琴南壮年时曾做很通俗的白话诗——这算不得公平的舆论……迷上《茶花女》林纾是福州人,生于1852年。林家世代务农,祖父辈始入城,父林国铨贩盐为生。林纾4岁时,父亲的盐船触礁沉没,致倾家荡产,父亲去了台湾。林纾在祖母和母亲拉扯下长大。林纾9岁入私塾,曾在墙上画一棺材,写道:“读书则生,不则入棺。”林纾22岁时学画,虽患咯血症,10年不愈,却“一日未尝去书,亦未尝辍笔不画”。
