The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, home to the Gulf of Arka in the Eastern Cape, is part of Nelson Mandela Bay and South Africa’s third largest port and hub for the automotive industry. Port Elizabeth was chosen to host the 2010 World Cup because of its pleasant climatic conditions, its extensive recreational water activities and its proximity to the National Park. The designer intends to build a landmark for the “Capital of Winds,” a concept that is realized through stadiums. Close to the city center and convenient transportation, the stadium is a multi-functional sports facility besides football and rugby competitions, as well as water sports and cycling. The stadium accommodates 46,000 spectators and is the largest stadium in Port Elizabeth.
