In British Columbia, Canada, the use of existing cultivars of spartan varieties is highly recommended for high turnover with other varieties because of their susceptibility to browning during storage due to the availability of apples. After the high takeover, the nutrient status of the scion varieties is not necessarily affected by the intermediate anvil of the spatan variety. In addition, some reports suggest that calcium content in fruit is negatively correlated with browning. The content of potassium and soluble solids is positively correlated with browning. The authors studied the effect of spartan intermediate stock on the fruit and leaf inorganic nutrient content of four scion varieties, as to whether the scion had any effect on the scion.
