The Upper Katanga joint mining company, founded and run by Western colonialists, was nationalized during the Mobutu period and renamed the quarry and mining head office, becoming an important economic pillar for the country. When L. Kabila started his war with the Anti-Mobutuos in 1995, he partially handed over some of the company’s property rights to foreign companies and businessmen who financed him. L. Kabila was assassinated after his son J. Kabila succeeded the president and accepted the restructuring plan proposed by the World Bank. This plan puts the state-owned quarry and mining head office in full privatization. The purpose of this article is to portray the difficult road to economic independence for African countries by analyzing and studying the historical changes of this company.
