恩施土家族苗族自治州位于湖北省的西南角,在云贵高原的东端,也是西南少数民族的东部地区。境内清江由西到东横贯中部,武陵山脉雄踞清江之南,巫山山脉耸立于清江之北。境内崇山竣岭,山河相间,山高水深,交通极为不便。原先土家族基本上是这个地区的单一民族,其后,经过明清两代的大移民,形成多民族地区。现有土家族、苗族、汉族、侗族、蒙古族、回族等民族。各民族和睦相处,团结互助,关系融洽。
