The Aldabra is like a string of beautiful coral wreaths floating at the western Indian Ocean end. It is one of the best-preserved atolls in the world: the four larger Coral Islands enclose an oval, and they are separated from each other by watercourses, in the middle of a huge, green, mirror-like lagoon. Navy blue waterways are intricate paths that meander through lagoons (lagoons formed by the shallow water bays that are open to sea at orgasm). The lagoon, surrounded by coral reef islands, is an area of 14,000 hectares. When the tide rises, the turbulent sea water flows into the lagoon along the narrow channel between the islands. The height of the water surface can rise more than 3 meters in an instant. At low tide, the sea water is pouring at a speed close to 20 kilometers per hour.
