Dilated breast cancer has many painful manifestations, probably the worst is bone metastases, which occurs in about 60% of patients. The main effects of osteolytic bone destruction are bone pain, pathological fractures, and hypercalcemia, the latter being one of the major causes of death after bone metastases. Unfortunately, while various cytotoxic drugs, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy regimens can be temporarily alleviated, progressive bone destruction remains a major problem. Some recent studies suggest that bisphosphonates may have inhibitory effects on tumor-induced bone resorption. The results of long-term clinical trials in this area have been reported by Finnish researchers
