According to the data on the incidence of statutory infectious diseases from 1996 to 1999 and the cause of death, the health status of the residents in the urban areas of Wuxi in the late 1990s was analyzed. The results showed that the average life expectancy of the residents reached 75.76 years, while the incidence of statutory infectious diseases reported in categories A and B was still relatively high, reaching 447.41/100 000; among them, gonorrhea, syphilis and hepatitis B showed an increasing trend year by year. The disease still seriously jeopardizes the health of the people; at the end of the 1990s, the city of Wuxi mainly died of chronic noncommunicable diseases such as circulatory diseases, malignant tumors, and respiratory diseases. Chronic diseases have become an important public health problem in the city; One of the main causes of premature death of residents. To this end, it is proposed that disease prevention and health care in the 21st century must take the prevention and control of infectious diseases and chronic diseases at the same time, meet the double challenges, and at the same time strengthen prevention against accidental injuries, protect the labor force, and improve the health level.
