球锰是一种具同心圆状层圈构造的氧化锰矿石,是第四纪堆积型锰矿床中主要矿石类型之一。球锰分布比较广,只要原生岩层含锰量高于克拉克值,风化后在有利的地形、地貌等条件下就能形成球锰,特别是在堆积型锰矿床发育的地区,地表及坡积裙外缘球锰尤多。球锰的大量分布是寻找并圈定堆积型锰矿床范围的直接标志。因此,研究它的成因对解决第四纪堆积型锰矿床的形成很有帮助。
