工艺缺陷始终与中国陶瓷艺术发展相伴随。宋代前,人们以掩饰缺陷为主,分为直接掩饰与间接掩饰两种。约在宋代时,陶瓷艺术从掩饰缺陷发展到设计缺陷,并一直延续至今。陶瓷艺术缺陷设计可分为完美与非完美两大类。完美缺陷设计有规律性和审美性两大特性,非完美缺陷设计有无序性与情感性两大特性。陶瓷艺术缺陷设计主要表现为和谐自然与追求个性两大理念。
