Several Principles We Should Follow in English Grammar Teaching

  【摘要】语法教学是中学英语教学重要的一部分,很多中学生普遍认为语法很难,填鸭式的教学方式导致他们只是学到了很多语法规则,但是运用能力卻很弱。本篇文章结合本人的教学实践和研究,总结了几条教学中应遵循的原则。

  English grammar covers a lot and students are at different learning level. So, we should follow the following principles in English grammar teaching.
  
  1Contrast Principle
  
  Contrast principle refers to that, through the contrast of English and Chinese, the teacher helps studentsto find out the items which are difficult. Afterthe research is determined, through comparison, contrast, analysis, the teacher should offer a specific topic to the learners for study. The teacher can also lead the students to find out and putforward the topic themselves. What' more, since there are difficulties existing in students'learning ability, more emphasis should be put on their grammar research purpose.
  
  2Function Principle
  
  Function principle means the selected grammar should be within the range of English teaching syllabus and fit students'thinking and knowledge level. We should remember that their research study is not equal to experts' research. Or, it will be beyond most students' ability to learn English grammar.
  
  3Interest Principle
  
  This principle requires that we should respect and develop students' research interest when we select the research content, and help each student fix his or her own topic. They should choose a special way to do deep research which can show their own character, and have their own comprehension about grammar learning. When dividing groups and determining research results, we should also consider students' interest.
  
  4Cross-cultural Communication Principle
  
  Cross-cultural communication means communication between different cultures. Language is in close relation with culture, and language is an important carrier of culture. In research study, teachers should lead their students to study grammar in the process of comprehending cultural differences. English films can offer cultural nutrition to Chinese middle school students vividly and are very fit for their study. Cultural information in literature and films not only offers indirect life experience to the students, but also help them to remember it for a very long time, and improves their ability of comprehending and using English. Cultural background not only offers opportunity for students to study grammar, but also is one of the important elements which influence English teaching.In addition, we should start from real conditions, and make full use of local educational resources. The following points should be followed:
  4.1Lead the students to read English newspapers and magazines, such as students Post, 21 stCentury, Learning English, China Daily, Crazy English, and so on. Find out grammatical items in them;
  4.2Ask the students to read some simple readings, then take notes about their research, and study the grammatical items in the context;
  4.3Ask the students to see some English films, then make comment on them, list the grammatical items, and try their best to experience English in daily life;
  4.4Ask the students to read grammar books, and understand what is written by grammar experts;
  4.5Read textbooks carefully, study the grammatical items and their usage in context once more;
  4.6Go online to consult relevant materials;
  4.7Go to visit English teachers and grammar expert;
  4.8Go to visit foreign teachers.
  4.9Organize 3 to 6 students to make a group, and find a leader who is responsible for the research plan. Teachers are to make comments on the plans and give suggestion.
