For decades between 1970 and 2000, formal literary studies in Western Europe and North America were dominated by the spread of post-structuralist literary theories, often removing classic text from curricula. Although some of these theories can bring some enlightenment, if the excessive pursuit leads to the consequence of marginalizing the judgment of the intrinsic value of the text, the one that bore the brunt of the issue of truth and beauty. Its influence, in the case of students, turns them to be interested in other subjects, whereas for many scholars and teachers there is no convincing reason for literary studies. The thesis of this article is that it is time to relocate the study of literature to the social context and to re-acknowledge that the literary masterpiece has the traditional role of giving birth to the will to seek truth and thereby restore the authority of literary research disciplines.
