Significant differences were found when carefully examining the purity of individual heats of ball bearing steel produced in an alkaline electric furnace according to established procedures. The reason for this difference is a complex one. The statistical analysis of test data for multiple smelters is the best method available when there are a number of factors that can affect the purity of the steel, and this method can clarify the role of each factor [20].
