我国在1954年试制出的初级教练机初教五,是根据雅克-18飞机仿制的,起落架为后三点式。随着我国空军训练的进一步发展,对初级教练机的性能提出了更高的要求,并且要求起落架为前三点式。此时苏联已经研制出前三点式的雅克-18A,并将图纸送交中国。沈阳飞机设计室主任徐舜寿从培养、锻炼我国自己设计队伍,增强自行设计飞机能力出发,提出了自行设计一种新型的初级教练机——初教六的建议,并得到了上级批准。初教六飞机是双座、下单翼、前三点式的初级教练机,动力装置为一台额定功率285马力的活塞六甲发动机,配以双叶自动变距螺旋桨。初教六的机身、机翼和尾翼安定面为全金属结构,
