直译该书书名,是《信贷的品格:英国文化中的个人债务(1740—1914)》,这个翻译甚为蹩扭,若套用当代中文流行词汇,似应改为《18至20世纪初英国的个人债务文化》。作者是这样界定其研究问题的: 正式或非正式的债项、作为礼物的现金或货物、乞钱、借钱、死皮赖脸地求助以及最后避债潜逃,这些是乔治时代(十八世纪)消费者革命期间、英国各阶层男男女女都采用的重要的经济手段,也是维多利亚时代(十九世纪)至爱德华时代(二十世纪初)英国消费者文化的关键一环。信贷关系,既深刻地模塑了英国的社会、文化生活,也被英国当时的社会、文化规范所影响(页2)。
Literal translation of the title of the book is “the character of credit: personal debt in British culture (1740-1914)”. This translation is very poor. If we apply the contemporary Chinese popular vocabulary, it seems appropriate to read “The United Kingdom Personal debt culture. ” The authors define the issue of their study as follows: formal or informal debt, cash or goods as a gift, begging for money, borrowing money, asking for help from Sipilal, and finally avoiding absconding - consumers of George Era (18th century) During the revolution, important economic instruments employed by men and women of all walks of life in Britain were also key elements of the British consumer culture during the Victorian (19th) and Edwardian (early twentieth century) years. Credit relations, both profoundly molded British social and cultural life, were also influenced by the then social and cultural norms in England (p. 2).
