1930年Kurzrok和Lieb发现如将新鲜的人精液滴入人的子宫体内,可引起子宫强烈的收缩或松弛。1933~1934年Goldbatt Euler分别发现,在人精液或羊精囊腺的提取液中存在着的一种物质能使血压降低和各种平滑肌兴奋。Euler称此脂溶物质为前列腺素(Prostaglandin简称PG) 随着分离物质技术(薄层层析、气-液层析)以及超微量测定分子结构的方法(核磁共振谱、质谱、重原子衍生物的X射线结晶谱)的发展,Bergstrom等于1957年分离得到PGE_1和PGF_(1a)的结晶,并于1962年证明了这两个化合物的分子结构。之后又分离到PGE_2和PGE_3
1930 Kurzrok and Lieb found that if the fresh human semen dripping into the human uterus can cause strong contraction or relaxation of the uterus. Goldbatt Euler, from 1933 to 1934, found that a substance present in human semen or in the seminal vesicle of the goat, respectively, lowers blood pressure and excites various types of smooth muscle. Euler called the fat-soluble substance Prostaglandin (PG) with the separation of substances (TLC, gas-liquid chromatography) and ultra-trace determination of molecular structure (NMR, MS, heavy atom derivatives X-ray crystallography). Bergstrom was equivalent to the crystallization of PGE_1 and PGF_ (1a) in 1957, and the molecular structures of these two compounds were demonstrated in 1962. Later, PGE_2 and PGE_3 were isolated
