菊花斑枯病为华南地区菊花发生最普遍而严重的一个病害。病原菌鉴定为Septoriachrysanthemella Sacc.,与国内大多数地区所鉴定的相一致,但其生长适温比国外所报道的为高,而与我国台湾省所报道的极为相似,这可能是不同于国外所报道的另一菌系。 此菌在人工培养基上生长极缓慢,形成黑褐色紧密状菌落。合适培养基为燕麦培养基、PDA培养基和菊花叶汁培养基,尤以燕麦培养基为最佳,这是前人所未曾报道的,而文献认为适于Septoria生长的蔗糖硫酸铵等三种人工合成培养基却不适于此菌生长。 此菌产孢适温为20~24℃,在此温度下和合适培养基上产孢所需时间均为16天;光照或黑暗对产孢无影响;产孢量亦以燕麦培养基为最佳。分生孢子萌发适温为26~28℃,适宜pH为5~7,并需要充足水湿、氧气和一定养料,即使在饱和湿度下孢子也不萌发,在嫌气条件下或在清水中孢子不萌发或萌发率极低;在供试的9种糖液中,以鼠李糖(Rhamnose)、葡萄糖(Glucose)、淀粉(starch)、乳糖(Lactose)对孢子萌发较好,最差的为麦芽糖 (Maltose)。
