2009年,美国能源部部长、诺贝尔物理学奖获得者朱棣文访华,在此期间他特地前往天津,并在天津大学(原北洋大学)做了演讲。为何朱棣文要去天津呢?原来是为了追寻外祖父的足迹,感怀老人的母校。朱棣文的外祖父正是北洋大学历史上执掌学校时间最长的校长——李书田。李书田说来也是个传奇式的人物,一人获得了三个美国博士学位,历任唐山工学院、北洋工学院(即北洋大学,1928年更名为国立北洋工学院,1946年复校时恢复北洋大学原名)、国立西北工学院、西康技专、贵州农工学院等多所高校校长。
In 2009, U.S. Secretary of Energy and Steven Chu, Nobel Laureate in Physics, visited China. During this period, he made a special trip to Tianjin and gave a speech at Tianjin University (formerly Beiyang University). Why did Steven Chu go to Tianjin? The original intention was to trace the grandfather’s footsteps and feel the elderly’s alma mater. Steven Chu’s grandfather is the headmaster of the oldest school in the history of Beiyang University - Shu-Tian.
