短篇小说 The Empty Lunch-tin 写的是窗外伫立在草坪上的一个年轻人。由于他的外表与房子女主人的故去的儿子有相似之处,勾起了她对儿子 Greg 的怀念。Greg 虽然已经死去七年,但是作为母亲她能想象出他在15岁、17岁、20岁该长成什么样子。Greg 喜欢她做的一种花生饼干,由于她把窗外的年轻人当作 Greg,地立即和面、烘烤,做出了饼干。但当饼干做好,正准备去送给那个年轻人时,她的理智阻止她去做如此愚蠢的事。她甚至把 Greg 的房间清理出来,准备邀请年轻人住进来,自然,她也没有勇气去实现这一计划。文中对于母亲思子之情写得细腻感人,对于她的理智与感情的冲撞刻画得尤为巧妙,不愧为大手笔的佳作。
The short story The Empty Lunch-tin is written by a young man standing on the lawn outside the window. Because of his appearance and the house mistress’s son to go there are similarities, elicited her miss son Greg. Although Greg has already been dead for seven years, as a mother she can imagine what he looks like at the age of 15, 17 and 20. Greg likes the peanut biscuits she’s made because she treats young people out of the window as Gregs, instantly and pasta, baking and making cookies. But when the biscuits were well prepared to give that young man, her reason prevented her from doing such stupid things. She even cleaned up Greg’s room and was ready to invite young people to come in and naturally she had no courage to do that. The article for the feelings of the mother thought of delicate delicate touch, for her sense of conflict and emotional depiction is particularly clever, deserved as generous masterpiece.
