In 1978, Sumitomo Electric Japan successfully developed the optoelectronic composite cable for the seabed, which is the world’s first cable. A 3.2km long composite cable is laid at the bottom of Tokuyama Bay for use by Idemitsu Co Ltd’s Tokuyama refinery. Because of the optical fiber in the composite cable is waterproof, so science and technology institutions selected as the “noteworthy invention.” This invention is considered as an important element in the construction of submarine cables. This kind of optoelectronic composite cable for the seabed plays a leading role in promoting the development of the photoelectric composite package. Sumitomo Electric has also successfully constructed the following optical fiber composite products: (1) overhead optical fiber composite ground (OPGW); (2) ordinary factory use
