The vast majority of Nelson Algren’s work, based on the Chicago ghetto, shows the decay of industrial city order and the degeneracy of urban agglomeration and its dualistic construction: the neon sign and wilderness of urban characterization; Open-minded and Prisoners in Urban Space; Sin and Punishment in Soul Problems. Writers prefer to live in urban slums: drug users, prostitutes, casino licensees, fraudulent vendors, thieves, gangsters and more. They are the protagonists of the novel, living in inner-city areas characterized by neon signs, experiencing the fall of urban life and the torture of souls. These are by-products of the environment, poor, ignorant, failing and somewhat evil, but their humanity is not completely extinguished. Following Dreiser, Farrell and Wright, Elgren became the last great novelist to write in the industrial city of Chicago.
